To assist you to understand the alternative ways of accessing the internet we have prepared the following illustration. Traditional wired networks (copper) are used to deliver dial-up, ADSL1 and ADSL 2+ services. Wireless internet access can be provided through wifi, WiMax, 3G and satellite.
Coax cable (the system used for television aerial reception) has been adapted and is deployed in Melbourne and Sydney and in some other parts of Australia. This technology is not used on the Sunshine Coast.
Optic fibre has been developed by the telecommunications industry as a very high speed broadband solution and is the preferred technology for deployment in all new developments across the Sunshine Coast. The cost of installing optic fibre is marginally higher however it uses less electricity to run and has a smaller environmental footprint than other broadband technologies.
